Let's Take It From The Top

I'm not generally a fan of hats, though that might stem from the fact that I look terrible in them. I'd probably only wear one if my life depended on it. Despite my personal bias, though, I'll try to be open-minded about hats and give some real, practical advice. Here're a few situations where hats are appropriate, and a few where they aren't:

When Hats Are Appropriate:
  1. If you're otherwise irrevocably badass.
  2. If your job requires you to wear a hat.
  3. If you're the Pope.
When Hats Aren't Appropriate:
  1. If you look anything like this
All joking aside, in the end you just need to know if you can pull off the look. There's no formula for hat-wearing; you just need to experiment and find out what works for you. Type of hat--in the abstract--isn't as important as whether the hat-style is appropriate for your situation. Don't wear a giant cowboy hat to the movies, a bowler to a BK, or a flat cap unless you're from the 20's. Remember, though, that hats are a non-essential garment, so when in doubt, throw that hat out.

Stickers: A Shift in Consumption Style or Just Pretty?
Let me also remark on something that I've never quite understood. There's, you know, that sort of hat with the flat brim from which people never seem to take off the sticker. Seriously, there's a whole generation who seems to have forgotten to take off the packaging. What's with that? I'm not exactly a shopping guru (...or am I?), but I thought that if you didn't take off the tag it meant you were going to return the item. Is there an entire subculture lurking among us who subscribes to a paradigm of transient hat ownership? Or is it just that stickers make things prettier? Seriously, someone help me out. I'm baffled.

  1. Jackson,

So clever! I love this blog! I commented once on your first post, and naturally had to look at your second one. I love the comedic angle you use to talk about hats. I was curious as to how your life depended on a hat and when I clicked the link and saw an astronaut I had to giggle. I think the links you used for your second post were awesome! I like the way you followed up the hat subject with stickers on hats--I think it flows well from the original hat subject. Once again, your drawing is intriguing. I hope you keep this blog going....

  2. Jackson,

Your blog is the most clever and amusing thing I've read. Your links add so much enjoyment to the blog because they are hilarious! I think you've created something good here because you definitely catch the readers' interest -- well mine that is! I am intrigued to see what else you can come up with!

  3. Your link to "irrevocably badass" - art. Look up Ronnie Drew from The Dubliners, he's got a fierce beard that's basically a wizened extension of the chin; can't wait to have a fierce beard of my own. Now to the classroom sounding part; great use of links. If it weren't an out-dated form of BroDouchery, I'd say throw a post up about this: http://sparklingwhine.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/popped-collar-3.jpg

Hope those two links didn't ruin your day like they did mine. Good reading.

  4. Jackson,

I really will continue reading this blog after our class is over... Hilarious! From the astronaut picture to the bad-ass picture, you had me laughing to where my roommate just came and asked what was going on...

As a hat-wearer, I can identify with your argument here. I hate the stickers that are left on the brim (they are mainly to identify that they are authentic "New Era" brand, which is still pretty ignorant in my mind). I did not take this article personally at all; it actually enriched my appreciation for my chosen style (not looking like the people in your pictures) haha... I can't stop laughing...

  5. Jackson,

Once again a hilarious post. You use the hyperlinks to your comedic advantage and to that of the blog in whole. You also have some sound advice that generally can be extended to most facets of life, i.e. "when in doubt, throw it out."

I also like your commentary on the sticker, I'm also confused as to their exact purpose. One thought is that they may be status symbols to show that the hat was bought at a hat distributor and is still pristine in its quality--although I really have no clue--perhaps a poll would shed some light on this issue.
