Clothing is a weird concept. How is it that whatever fabric we happen to drape around ourselves ultimately tells others more about us more rapidly (and sometimes more powerfully) than anything we say? Did you notice that the picture at the top (which I drew!) doesn't actually have a person in it?
The concept of clothing as a part of humanity is so firmly entrenched in our psyche that you probably already started anthropomorphizing that guy up there, didn't you?
That's why you need my apathetic, ragamuffin's perspective on fashion. I'm so un-hip my left leg is on the right side.
That's why I'm making this blog. Consider it an amateur attempt at The Urban Gentleman for real people. I'm not guaranteeing great (or even serious) advice, but I can promise discerning insights common sense and an entertaining dose of irreverence for my subject material. Buckle up: we're plunging into The Fashion Abyss.
Good start. The first thing that caught my eye is the layout, it is pretty clear you put a bit more time than most people into making it unique. Hope to see good things in the future
ReplyDeleteJackson,
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing haha.. I sometimes wonder why I think so much about clothes. I really like your psychoanalysis of the whole fasion idea; it really makes the reader stand back and ask themselves, "am I a douche?" haha...
Your ideas about fashion are so obvious and apparent with your layout, your artwork, and your comical hyperlink haha... That really made me laugh and I cannot understand why that is considered "hip"...btw your un-hip joke is amazing haha
Jackson,
ReplyDeleteHow true, I anthropomorphized your cartoon immediately. Such illustrations are a strong supplement to your written word and I imagine you will keep them coming.
Your hyperlink vaguely entitled "this" caught my curiosity and I clicked it...for better or for worse...an effective strategy.
I'd like to put your statement that "clothing tells others more about us than what we say" to the test. Perhaps you could dawn some highly stereotypical outfits and see how people treat you differently. I hear popping your color goes a long way with the preps, just make sure there's actually a polo logo on your shirt and not some poser moose or eagle right?
Overall I think it's your voice that makes the blog. Your "un-hip" qualification is whats going to bring me back to the site for some refreshing insight into the world of fashion presented in a way that equally un-hip people like myself can understand.

I can't tell you how many times I've sat at a bar with my friends and wondered how in the world people think the whole "I don't care how I look" trend is appealing. The sad thing is these people care more than 90% of the people at the bar. Their "disheveled" look is simply a facade. It's pathetic. They probably spend twice as long to get ready, and just look, well, awful. I'm interested to hear what else you have to say. Great idea for a blog.
ReplyDeleteHey Jackson,
ReplyDeleteSo this is interesting! I like hearing the guy perspective on fashion from both ends of the spectrum--like or hate. Since I love to go shopping and buy clothes, I find this intriguing. The picture at the top adds some flair by the way. Are you going to use real people for examples, or trends? Good first post, you have my attention.
Brittany
Hey Jackson,
ReplyDeleteFrom a guy whose been called everything from hipster to metro, I really want to see/hear your view on the matter. I know I have days when I try to impress myself even--my narcissistic self-- and other days when I could where my old gym jersey and some board shorts to be content. For me it is a matter of comfort and mood; I'm excited to hear your take on clothing trends.
Jackson,
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what else you have to put on this site. I've often thought the same thing about fashion. People get mad at me for wearing stripes with plaid or unmatching colors. I then tell them to go to a fashion show and to name one real person they know wearing a trashbag for a dress or whatever they're "modeling" that month. Apparently I need fashion advice, so keep them coming. And give me some more drawings or real pictures.
Hey Jackson,
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to hear your take on fashion/clothing trends...I've been labeled everything from hipster to metro; some days I dress to impress (myself) and other days I stroll around in my old gym jersey and a pair of board shorts. I think I shop in accordance to my mood--sometimes music holds some inspiration for my choices. It's also interesting that you've posted a link that gives a good counter-perspective for how you plan on dealing with your blog. This should be a fun read. Hopefully you'll have lots of fun pictures.

Jackson,
ReplyDeleteI love this! You got my attention right from the start, and you have a great voice throughout the blog. I definitely like to shop but I can see the other side of the spectrum as well. It's always interesting to hear different peoples thoughts on fashion and clothing because they can be so drastically different. I'm looking forward to reading more of this!
